Cavtat is a small historical town located in the county of Dubrovnik-Neretva, in the south of Croatia, more than 600km from the capital Zagreb.
As mentioned above, Cavtat is a historical town. Indeed, the origins of its creation are as exciting as they are remote, since it was founded by the Greeks and then reconquered by the Romans in 228 before J-C, hence its ancient Latin name of Civitas Vitus. A little later, the city was also invaded by the Slavs in the 7th century.
Dotted with pebbled beaches and pine forests, Cavtat is an ideal destination for families looking for peace and quiet.
The small town is full of ancient, Gothic and Renaissance monuments and architecture.
You can start with a visit to the old town. For example, if you go to the quayside, you will find the charming Saint-Nicolas Church where you can visit a baroque presbytery as well as a pinacotheque presenting a whole set of pictorial works.
You can also visit the House of Vlaho Bukovac who was one of the most popular and influential painters of the realist movement between the 19th and 20th century. In his house there are many frescoes, portraits and works of the artist. It is a real museum.
If you are looking for enchanting panoramic views, the Saint-Roch cemetery is ideal. Located on Mount St. Roch above a hill, the cemetery offers a view of the city of Cavtat and the gentle movement of the Adriatic Sea.
On the same spot is the mausoleum of the Racic family, bankers and shipowners from Dubrovnik, built between 1920 and 1921. The dome-shaped and octagonal funeral monument was sculpted by Ivan Mestrovic, the most famous Yugoslav sculptor of the 20th century.
Finally, there is also the possibility to travel by boat to the neighbouring islands of Cavtat, such as St. Peter's Island, where you can discover new green landscapes that are as soothing as they are heavenly.
The best time to go to Cavtat is during summer, between June and August. Indeed, at this time of year, the weather is warm but very pleasant, which is ideal for visits and excursions in the city. In addition, the city often hosts cultural and sporting events in the summer.
