A few days ago, I was asked to film an adventure video along with 4 globally renowned pro athletes. Something along the lines of “A day in the life…�, where everyone is doing everybody else’s sport in one day. Florian Örley (snowboard freerider), Tom Öhler (trail biker), Anna Stöhr and Jakob Schubert (climbers). After an hour in the glacier, my eyes could only see WHITE due to the snow and reflection. Looking at my mobile phone for the live feed, served absolutely no purpose. I saw the drone was in position, and clicked the button. 12 hours later at home I saw this. Gulp.
Taking photos and making videos is a process that takes time. Sometimes too much time. It involves frequent stops, adjust settings, adjust lenses and whatnot. Most of the time, the person caught up in all this is my girl. And I end up following her all the time. So I have to make it up to her somehow. Take a nice photo of her, upload it on Unsplash and blast it across socials. Trust me, if she’d let me, I’d take more photos of her. She’s camera shy for the time being.
We left work a little earlier and drove an hour south of Vienna to hike up Lower Austria’s Schneeberg. While ascending the wind picked up and the temperatures dropped to around 0 degrees Celcius. We were lucky to find a kind of sheltered spot to pitch the tent and lay awake basically the whole night with a storm bursting over our piece of textile hooked to some poles. An experience we will not forget for a while and a good example to escape more often and practice being uncomfortable.
When my friends and I hopped in the car to spend a weekend at a friends cabin near the Zillertal in Austria I took my camera with me with the expectation of taking some snapshot-memories for the squad. As it turned out the sky was crystal clear the first night with no clouds which allowed an unbelievable look at the stars. I never felt so lucky taking my camera somewhere.
Mountains made me fall in love with photography and photography made me fall in love with the mountains. This never seizes to amaze me. Here we are, officially in spring and there’s still plenty of snow to go around. I will be keep on being amazed for many years to come for sure. I mean, what do you expect from a Greek guy moving from the blue beaches to the white mountains?
I was going in the forest for a few video shots, nearly broke my whole foot because i slipped out of and old wrecked tree with my shoes who didn’t had any profil at all on it… Anyway i got a couple of pictures and videos, it was just about to get dark and right before that i saw this moody little spot where i climbed up, and also nearly died to get up here. Maybe the forest don’t like me at all nevermind was worth it.
The title in German translates to “Tyrol is exciting�. It’s a clearly German expression for amazement or extravagance. Just like watching a great film in the cinema; hence the “Kino�. If you ask me, Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones could have easily used the Austrian landscapes for several scenes. Oh well, at least we got James Bond. Not the same tho… (fanboy-ing so hard right now).
So after not having been able to see a sunrise at my first flight, I decided to do a second trip, quite a bit of time later though. I got up at half past four and drove to the airport. We planned to take-off at about 10 minutes before five so we could see the sun rising at around 5:00. Everything went well and we were in the air circling around and waiting for the sun to rise above those mountains. After several minutes of waiting I finally saw it. The sun, a giant ball of plasma, has just risen above the mountains and shone in a deep red. I really never saw such a beautiful thing like that.
It had been a nice vacation in austria so far, but the weather had been quite unsatisfying the whole week. Though it was the middle of summer, our shirts had been staying in the suitcase every day. Plus it had been constantly cloudy. Carrying my heavy camera around seemed like a mockery. When we arrived at the top of the Kitzsteinhorn in Kaprun, which is 3029 metres high, the sun finally came out. It lasted for about five minutes at most. But that was enough to take a few pictures.
I visited Austria two weeks ago for a one week vacation. Together with my girlfriend we decided to do a hike to one of the beautiful mountain tops in Austria. This was around 3.5 hours up(top was at 2508m and we started at 1000m). We barely made it to the top because we were untrained & unprepared but after motivating each other we finally made it to the top in 4,5 hours. I have to say that this was one of the best feelings ever. To walk in nature, seeing nobody but mother nature itself and winning that mind game you keep playing with yourself on the way to the top, priceless experience!
I thought of paying a tribute to the mildly interesting winter we had this year. One thing is for sure, the seasons are changing, climate is changing, I grow older, winter is leaving. I think this photograph summarizes my feelings for this winter. Epic scenery, meh mood, moody, mellow, average vibes. Dunno. Must be the fact that I had a game-changing year transition in my life. That or the lack of sleep.
What seemed like a normal rainfall in July 2018 quickly developed into one of the heaviest hailstorms I ever saw. Within minutes, the yard was covered in white, branches cracked and our plants were destroyed. Temperatures where in the 20 degree celsius, so the ice started to evaporate quickly, leading to an autumn-like fog and mist. Also after the storm was over, we were compensated with this beautiful rainbow.
Waves splashing gently, Sea of green laps at your hull, The horizon calls. It’s one of the most amazing qualities of a drone, to be able to sit far away, and send yourself to take a peek at things beyond your reach. We spent a fun time sitting at a panorama and chasing boats over the surface of Wolfgangsee. Capturing one just the way I wanted was a nice little challenge that further helped push my control of the little aerial monster. As always it makes me itch to go send it flying again, and discover new sceneries through it’s flying eyes.
On an offline retreat, we stayed in the cottage which can be seen to the lower left-hand side in the far distance. We did a hike around the lake and this is the view that we were presented with. It’s incredibly beautiful up there in the summer and we always experience some sunshine as well as snowy/rainy days, perfect for some sauna time. The views are stunning and breathtaking. The latest James Bond film, Spectre, was literally shot one hour away from home. Last weekend I was there with my partner in crime, to enjoy the beautiful view and to be “tortured� with the soundtrack of the movie (it played over and over and over on the restaurant’s speakers). When I say OST, I don’t mean the songs but the cinematic score of the intro & credits. Like, how many times can this play in 2-3 hours. That’s how long we stayed there.
Sometimes with photography you just got to get lucky. So lucky that you even discover a shot you took 3 years ago, and didn’t remember it. Late last night I took a trip down memory lane, and began digging into my archive. Back then I only had an GoPro (rip) and a Canon G7x (set in full auto mode). Run and gun with nothing in mind. Back then my backpack was only 2.5kg most of it being water and a change of clothes. Camera was pocket size, no extra lenses, no drone. I kinda miss those days and I also kinda want to redo the hikes to get the same shots with a better camera. Is it worth it though?
After a three to four hour hiking and climping tour I reached the summit of the Hochlantsch (around 5650ft or 1720m above the sea level). It was a bright and sunny day and the view was amazing, but what really catched my attention were the layers of mountains which faded the further they were away. The epic clouds and my choice to edit the photo monochrome really add to that effect.
Less than a year ago, I uploaded my first photo on unsplash. One year ago my work status changed. Two years ago I started uploading a photo every day on Instagram. Three years ago I made my youtube channel. Four (almost) years ago I met my girl. Five years ago I came to Austria. Six years ago I left home. Do more shit. You ain’t got much time left. Love it and spend it wisely.
On this morning I woke up to intense red light through my bedroom window. I knew what happened, and that I had to get out of bed instantly and photograph this scene. The sun rose over the horizon but there was some heavy mist over these fields which turned the whole scene brightly orange. I found this lonely tree which separated from the background perfectly because of the layers of mist between it and the fields and forests behind it.
