Kolmanskop feels like the start and end of nowhere. Once a booming diamond town, Kolmanskop in Namibia has long been abandoned to desert sands.⠀ ⠀ Today, Kolmanskop forms an eerie tableau of grand structures indiscriminately swallowed by desert . Just published an epic post on the blog: England’s 100 most popular hiking trails. With a little help from @alltrails, one of the world’s leading hiking apps, we’ve selected England’s most popular footpaths. Whether you’re an experienced hiker in need of fresh ideas or a first-timer hoping to get outdoors more, our selection offers a wealth of options from across the country. I have to admit, it's rather nice having woods, a river and a castle at the end of our road... Honestly, we lucked out when we stumbled upon . We can be in the @yorkshiredales national park in five minutes by car and 15 minutes on foot. It is one of 10 national parks in England, so it’s probably fair to say it’s one of the most beautiful places in the country. We’ve fallen utterly in love with it.

My exploits in the @yorkshiredales have been getting me a bit of local press! 📰 I was supposed to spend my summer attempting to climb Denali in Alaska, the highest mountain in North America and my fifth peak of the seven summits (the highest mountain on every continent). However, after international travel was put on hold, I readjusted my plans to hike the 41 micro-mountains of the Yorkshire Dales National Park instead! 😁 In the UK, 2,000ft is widely accepted as the benchmark height for when a hill is promoted to the lofty ranks of a mountain. Until recently, the Yorkshire Dales were home to 40 such landforms. However, in 2016, Calf Top was re-categorised as a mountain after @ordnancesurvey recalculated its height to 2000.02ft (609.606m), slightly above the threshold. As such, there are officially 41 "mountains" in the Yorkshire Dales National Park... and I've hiked them all! Today, Nepalese climbers completed the first winter ascent of K2 in Pakistan. At 8,611m (28,251ft), K2 is the second highest mountain on Earth, one of the 14 eight-thousanders, a member of the seven second summits and the final 8,000m peak to be climbed in winter! A mere mention of the legendary mountain is enough to make one’s blood run cold. K2 is known as the ‘Savage Mountain’ due to the extremely difficult ascent and one of the highest fatality rates among the eight-thousanders. I took this photo of K2 during my trek to base camp and am perfectly comfortable knowing it’s the closest I’ll ever get to beast! Sunsets in the Karakoam are magical. Legendary mountaineer Reinhold Messner described K2 as “the mountain of mountains” after completing the fourth ascent of the peak in 1979. “It is the most beautiful of all the high peaks,” he continued. “An artist has made this mountain.” I can’t think of a more befitting description. However, K2 has a symmetry and grace that in my mind, makes it the most striking of the 14 eight-thousanders. After nine days of trekking with @losthorizontreks we finally got our first view of the “Savage Mountain”. Still over 12km away, K2 rose above the surrounding mountains, its towering presence utterly overwhelming. Flanked by five of the world's 17 highest mountains, K2 soars in proud isolation over its neighbours. It is an awesome, frightening mountain. -⠀ -⠀ -⠀ -⠀ -⠀

The fairytale complex of Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy, France, dates as far back as the 8th century. Legend has it that the archangel Michael appeared in 708 to the bishop of Avranches and instructed him to build a church on the rocky islet. A monastery and abbey were erected over subsequent centuries, complete with fairytale flourishes: soaring spires and hulking ramparts that rise dramatically from the sea. Mont Saint-Michel is famed for its tidal variations. It offers extraordinary views even when the tide is out, but when the tide is in and night descends, the magic truly happens. We explored eerily empty alleys and pathways late into the evening where all was quiet but the wishing of the waves. - - - - - -

Best campsite ever? I’ve read reams of literature on K2 over the years, but one quote from the splendidly named British explorer Francis Younghusband stands out. Watching the sunset at in @australia. The hulking clay-red monolith is arguably the most famous sight in all of Oceania. We watched the sun-scorched sentry slowly change colour for what felt like an age. It was time well spent. Uluru lives up to the hype. It looms long and heavy, and is unavoidably affecting.
