HIking the Japanese Backcountry

A skier makes his way through one of the many fresh powder days in Niseko. Predictably up to 15 metres of powder come down on the region every year.

On the northern island of Japan lies the Niseko resort and surrounding mountains. Growing up and skiing in the Sierra Nevada mountains, traveling to Japan with your gear felt odd in the beginning. After we got settled in, we discovered some of the best snow we've ever experienced and didn't want to leave the island.

Autumn in Jozankei is stunningly beautiful but painfully short. I took a short excursion there to explore their famous Kouyou (red leaves) and this particular bridge caught my eye.

I went on a trip to Otaru, Hokkaido, Japan. It’s a city full of white snow. Today, the city is happy with snow.

The Otaru Canal was completed in 1923. At that time Hokkaido, a broad land of frigid cold, finally saw the growth of industry and the population began to increase. The port city Otaru was a major contributor to that development. This canal is a water route that supported shipping by sea. Alongside the canal, warehouses from long ago still remain.
