Travel guide of Kalambaka6 Eastern Orthodox monasteries built on top of rock pillars, listed as World Heritage site.

I head up to Meteora the other day in hope I’ll get some good sunset but at the last minutes while driving, the whole area went dark from these massive clouds. Took a fiew shots without any sign of the sun and when I was literally about to get in my car and head back home, a tiny crack appears and this magnificent ray of light reveals. Moral: Don’t give up easy, even if the odds are against you. The tide can always turn unexpectedly in your favor.

One of the last pictures in that amazing night in Meteora. The sunset didn’t offer as vivid color as I had hoped for, but the city light reflecting from the rocks added a soul and enigma to this breathtaking place. Meteora, Greece 2017

That’s Meteora in Greece. Six monasteries build on huge natural pillars. It’s a hidden gem in Greece as most travelers won’t find their way to this place which is around 3 hours away from Thessaloniki. We stayed there for a night during our road trip from Thessaloniki to Athens. This place was truly breathtaking.

The Meteora (Greek: Μετέωρα, pronounced [meˈteora]) is a rock formation in central Greece hosting one of the largest and most precipitously built complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries, second in importance only to Mount Athos. The six (of an original twenty four) monasteries are built on immense natural pillars and hill-like rounded boulders that dominate the local area. It is located near the town of Kalambaka at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly near the Pineios river and Pindus Mountains. The name means “lofty”, “elevated”, and is etymologically related to meteor.

The regional capital Ioannina to the west and the town of Perama to the north are urban settlements fringing the lake while the remaining of its periphery is composed of farmland. The lake features small fishing ports and a boating port. There is a regular boat service to the Ioannina Island.

It was a 10hours hike without seeing any human beings on the trail. We made it to Drakolimni (Papigko, Greece), stunning view that you will not forget!

While relaxing on the beach in Greece, suddenly, the skies darkened and this massive thundercell formed literally in seconds before our eyes. Shot this dramatic picture seconds before we frantically started packing our stuff and rain came pouring down in massive torrents accompanied by thunder and lightning. Zeus was not messing around that day!

We were lucky enough to be able to enter this magnificent cave with an opening on the other end. The textures on the sunnier side were so damn pretty.

The view of these Ionian island silhouettes is probably fairly similar to the one seen by ancient Greeks. Perhaps even Odysseus himself.
