Wildlife in Banff,, Canada

We had just finished up our day out in the wilderness of banff, and we were driving back into town. traffic slowed a bit, and we wondered what was going on. As we seemed to get close to what was causing the delay, I happened to look out my window and see this beautiful buck casually grazing. Thankfully my camera was sitting on my lap, and while we were sitting there, I was able to snap this picture.

Wildlife in Banff, Canada

It was coming on the tail end of our North American road trip. Alberta was the final destination after driving up the Pacific Coast. As soon as we crossed from British Columbia into Alberta, this mother Grizzly and her cub were eating flowers beside the road. I had just bought a super zoom specifically for this trip and I’m so thankful I did. We pulled over on the other side of the road and we were dead silent - Knowing how bears can be. My first time seeing a Grizzly and my first time in Alberta.

I live in Alberta, Canada and Banff is a fairly close drive that takes about an hour from where I live. Banff is one of my favorite places to take photos since I go on many hikes in the area. This image of the mountain with the forest in front was on of those hikes during the summer.

My father took this picture over 40 years ago. He was living in Canada after emigrating from Ireland and saw the country as a rich land full of opportunity.

This photo was taken while driving around Banff, Alberta. The curved road in the middle of those tall trees made it feel like we were getting deep into the woods. The Jeep was perfect for giving a better sense of scale on this shot.

I was so captivated by the lakes in Banff in the early mornings. The sky was so clear behind the mountains but there were clouds rolling in that allowed the sunrise to light the mountains with a little color. I was very lucky to be there at that moment.

Backpacking in Banff, Canada

Exploring Banff national park lead us to the very famous Lake Louise where we then decided to take a trail up into the mountains and discover something truly special. The trail was called the Plain of Six Glaciers and took you high into the mountain valley.

I found the skies to be amazing during a visit to Banff National Park. Locals had suggested a visit to Vermillion Lakes to catch views of local wildlife. This afternoon a storm was approaching as the sun was setting. It produced these incredibly colorful clouds that made for very moody shots.

On a trip to visit Banff Canada, had been directed by a local to visit Vermillion Lakes. Set off an early evening to see if any of the local wildlife might appear and was gifted this spectacular sky. A downed trees and a set of rocks presented a great framing, almost pointing the way to the view.

There is something about a huge mountain reflection in a lake that just puts you at ease. Here is another picture from my trip to the Canadian Rockies. Lake Minnewanka at Sunrise.

Lake in Two Jack Lake, Canada

Two Jack Lake is one of my favorite places to return to. The sunrises here are spectacular as the light hits Rundle Mountain and it reflects in the water. On this particular morning I noticed these stepping stones lent to give me the perfect composition for the spectacular background scenery. Looking back at this picture reminds me how peaceful it is at this lake in the early hours of the day.

During a 20km cross-country ski trek, we paused while passing a bridge to take in the scenery around us, and capture the moment with a camera. This is Banff & the Rocky’s at it’s finest.

My buddy Jeff and I tried to catch the “blue hour” at Banff yesterday. The clouds got in the way but not before we were able to catch a hint of emerging sunshine contrasted with the blue of the mountains before us. For me, I wished the moment lasted longer; it is quite interesting standing on a frozen lake surrounded by these majestic peaks.

Sometimes, when you are surrounded by a collection of great shots, turning around and lookng up can give a whole new look to your surroundings. That’s what happened here! While my buddy Jeff and I were focused on the mountains directly ahead of us, I turned 180 degrees and saw the first sliver of sun hitting the mountain behind us. I quickly turned around to capture the moment, and it was moment because the sun disappeared very quickly… I think I was lucky.

travelers stories about Highland in Ha Ling Peak, Canada

Highland in Ha Ling Peak, Canada

  18 km from Alberta

We decided to tackle the steep trail to Ha Ling Peak in an attempt to catch the sunrise. The entire ascent was on one side of the mountain which was part of a valley of peaks. The trees shrouded any view and there wasn’t much to see even after we had past the treeline. The last few hundred meters were filled with scree and as we finally reached the peak, this was the first thing we saw and it all immediately became worth it.

Canada has some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. This is not a heavily marked or walked trail. Amazing what you can find just off a wall worn hiking path.

A popular place for most tourists, my group of friends and I wanted to beat the rush. We arrived shortly after sunrise and began the hike and descent into the canyon in order to share the sound of rushing water alone. It is truly marvelous at the feat mother nature has created here.

Daybreak we woke up at a truck stop after crossing the border from Washington State into B.C. late the night before. As we got closer, the mist mountains grew taller and waters crystal blue. Our first taste of this trip was Vermilion Crossing in Kootenay National Park on our way to Banff.

Mountain range in Bow Valley Provincial Park - Kananaskis Country, Canada

I’m a born and raised Albertan, and always been active in one respect or another - taking advantage of our mountains for Skiing, camping and casual hikes over the years. I finally came to realize that I’d never completed a summit on any mountains worth noting, and so I decided along with 3 other friends that this mountain would be my first. It was quite a challenge, but as you can see the views were amazing! It was well worth the effort, and I an experience I’ll never forget. Mt Sparrowhawk’s summit sits at around 10,250ft (approx).
