Named for George Washington—the first U.S. president—the state was formed from the western part of the Washington Territory, which was ceded by the British Empire in 1846, by the Oregon Treaty in the settlement of the Oregon boundary dispute.

Mount Washington
- The first time I’ve ever been on a mountain - the weather was so unpredictable. Intense sun and heat at the base of the mountain. Enveloped in a cloud at the top of the mountain, and complete downpour between the two. I’m very glad there was a defined auto road to travel, to make the journey easier.
