Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Meteora is one of the most beautiful sights in the country. Located in the north of Greece in the region of Thessaly and in the valley of Penea, the site consists of rocky sediments that were formed under the sea 30 million years ago and where several monasteries dating from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. From the year 985, the first hermits of the place began to occupy caves nestled in these rocky peaks. The first monastery named Megalo Meteoro was built in 1382. Then, 22 other monasteries are born. The access is difficult and only ropes, ladders and systems of nets hung on pulleys allowed to go there. The majority of the monasteries are left in ruins from the XVIIIth century. Only six remained and the ingenious systems were transformed into stairs at the beginning of the last century. Today, they are well preserved and maintained by the religious who live there. The Megalo Meteoro is the largest monastery of the site and also the most touristic. To get there, nothing is easier than to start a long ascent up the stairs.
