Lefkada is the fourth largest island of the ionian group. Its name comes from the Greek word for "white" ("leucos") because of the white rocks on the southern coast of the island. Together with Evia, it is one of the only two islands of the grace that can be visited without a ferry as they are connected to the mainland by a floating bridge.
The majority of the island is covered by mountains and green hills. The coastline is very rich and includes many capes and peninsulas in its southern and eastern parts.
The beaches of Porto Katsiki and Egremni are the most famous and highest ranked in the world ranking of Greek beaches.
Other famous beaches on the west coast are Kathisma, Gialos and the three beaches of Kalamitsi, which are covered with tiny white pebbles and coarse sand.
