The largest national park in Croatia, Plitvice Lakes National Park covers 30,000 hectares and is located in the lower altitudes of the Dinarides in the center of the country. Dominated by a mixture of forests and meadows, the beautiful landscape fascinates and attracts many visitors and scientists. Connected by multiple waterfalls and streams, the lakes are classified into upper and lower lakes. The upper lakes are built on dolomites with shallow banks and are surrounded by thick green forests. On the contrary, the lower lakes are small and shallower and are located in limestone canyons. The result of thousands of years of natural geological processes, this lake system impresses many people. In addition to the beauty of its landscape, the park is home to an incredible biodiversity. From the plant world to the animal kingdom, Plitvice concentrates a rare fauna and flora. You may see the tracks of a brown bear, a gray wolf or a lynx. Over time, the waters have deposited barriers forming natural dams, caves and spectacular waterfalls.
