🏞️ Reservoir spotsThis glacial valley in the Sierra Nevada, with its surrounding mountains and redwood forests, is one of the highlights of American tourism. Yosemite Valley (pronounced Yosemiti), also known as "the incomparable valley", is one of the most representative and impressive examples of glacial valleys. Carved by the glaciers, it is almost flat with an eroded ground. It is overhung on both sides by vertiginous granite walls, including the famous El Capitan, a mythical wall in the world of climbing. Beware, Yosemite Park is beautiful and therefore very visited, especially in summer. The most visited sites sometimes lose their grandeur because of the mass of tourists who rush there. However, if some famous walks inside the park gather a lot of people, other corners are totally empty because the park is huge (about 302 640 ha). The history of Yosemite began about 500 million years ago, when shallow oceans covered western North America. These waters deposited sedimentary rocks. About 120 million years ago, two large tectonic plates collided. One of the plates slid under the other and this friction caused the rock to melt. Some of the molten rock rose to the surface as volcanoes, while the rest solidified underground to form granite. Erosion washed away the sedimentary rock and exposed the granite in many places. Glaciers then eroded the rock, shaping the landscape as we know it today. Weathering and erosion continue to transform the face of Yosemite.
