Travel Tips for visiting Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is an American suspension bridge located in the state of California, crossing the Golden Gate, the strait through which San Francisco Bay flows into the Pacific Ocean. It connects the city of San Francisco, located at the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula, to the city of Sausalito, located at the southern tip of the Marin County Peninsula. Financed by the Work Projects Administration, construction began in 1933 and lasted four years, ending in 1937.

Until 1964, the Golden Gate Bridge, an iconic landmark of San Francisco and California, spans the strait through which San Francisco Bay empties into the Pacific Ocean.Located in the northernmost part of San Francisco, the bridge connects the large Californian city with its nearby Sausalito, which lies just south of the bay in Marin County.. Famous throughout the world, it is easily recognisable thanks to its emblematic orange colour, the "international orange", and the architecture of its two pylons. It is even referred to as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World!Visiting it will give you a gorgeous panorama of the bridge and its surroundings, take a moment to contemplate the Pacific Ocean and the strait and San Francisco Bay.

Frequently Asked Questions by Travelers planning a trip to Golden Gate Bridge

Is the Golden Gate Bridge the longest bridge in America ?

Until 1964, the Golden Gate Bridge had the longest suspension bridge main span in the world, at 4,200 feet (1,300 m). Since 1964 its main span length has been surpassed by seventeen bridges; it now has the second-longest main span in the Americas, after the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in New York City.

The world-renowned bridge is named for the Golden Gate Strait, the narrow, turbulent, 300-foot-deep stretch of water below the bridge that links the Pacific Ocean on the west to San Francisco Bay on the east.

When it was built, the Golden Gate Bridge spanned 4,200 feet and staked its claim as the longest suspension bridge in the world. This is one of the most interesting facts about the Golden Gate Bridge because it held this record until 1964. That's over 25 years!
