Learn More about Oʻahu

Surfing at the foot of the volcanoes Discovered by James Cook in 1778, the Hawaiian archipelago floats in the exact middle of the Pacific, at a good distance from the United States and Japan. It is constituted of 137 islands, but only five of them are the most commonly visited, of which the main one, Oahu, hosts the capital, Honolulu. Nestled at the foot of the Diamond Head crater, Honolulu is a vibrant city that mixes nature and culture in a joyful mix. A city of contrasts, it is nestled in an exuberant natural landscape and has grown a sea of buildings. Honolulu is home to 75% of Hawaii's population and is wildly urban. However, you only have to go a few miles away to find the archipelago's landscapes: by climbing the extinct volcano of Diamond Head, you can enjoy the panorama and the immense beaches hemmed in by the bouncing waves of the Pacific. The wildest beaches and the most spectacular "pipeline" where the surfers' confrontations take place are located in the north of the island, on the North Shore. It is along the Waikiki coastline, made famous by the films of the 1960s and the songs of Elvis, that the city's madness is in full swing: the luxury boutiques, the line of shop windows where beachwear displays its wildest refinements. This is also the area that concentrates hotels as well as a pleasant palette of refined restaurants. This is the place to have a drink on the terraces to watch the ballet of shopping addicts. In the old colonial town, the Lolani Palace, the only Royal Palace in the United States, contains the thrones and memorabilia of the last monarchs of Hawaii, while the Bishop Museum, built in grey volcanic stone, contains an important collection of Polynesian artifacts, including the sumptuous bird-feathered capes of Hawaiian kings. The city also invites visitors to travel to the recent past by recounting the scorching history of Pearl Harbor memorials, west of downtown Honolulu, where much of the U.S. Pacific fleet was decimated in World War II. But it is mostly a festive memory that Honolulu leaves at the end, before opening its doors to the other islands of the archipelago ....
