โฐ๏ธ Hill ๐๏ธ Ocean ๐๏ธ Beach ๐๏ธ Surfing โฐ๏ธ Highland ๐ฒ EcoregionA narrow city located in California, USA, caught between the ocean and the mountain, it stretches like a snake. But is it a city? It is a place made up of the Pacific Coast Highway, to which houses are attached. You'll only realise how wide Malibu is when you drive the distance from Santa Monica Boulevard or Sunset Boulevard to Zuma Malibu Beach, home to many of the stars who also love the place. Malibu is a state of mind. Throughout the year, surfers in wetsuits ride the cool ocean waves, or go for their daily jog between tides. Under the foliage, lovely houses stretch out, either smart or nonsensical, modern or crumbling; in no apparent order, they huddle together along the ocean. However, this chic town, the only wilderness near Hollywood, is not very resort-like: on the seafront, the houses are squeezed between the beach, dirty beige and narrow, and the motorway. On the other hand, the mountains and their canyons above offer very pleasant spots of nature and, it is true, only a few minutes from the waves. According to legend, Malibu takes its name from Humaliwo, a name perfectly chosen by the Chumash Indians, the first inhabitants of the area, since it means "where the surf is loud". In any case, the town hall is built on the site of the old Indian village. The Malibu Pier, the town's centre of attraction since 1929, was damaged by the storms of Hurricane El Niรฑo in the last century.
