Leeds is the largest city in Yorkshire. Although far surpassed in beauty by historic York, the city is a lively university town with an up-and-coming arts and culture scene. Once a small market town, Leeds has developed into a major industrial city and was a forerunner of the English industrial revolution alongside Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool. Often cold and rainy in winter, waves of tourists flock to Yorkshire's largest city in the summer. The city hosts many festivals including one half of the famous Reading/Leeds double rock festival, reflecting the fact that Leeds is a key player in the indie music scene. Leeds has a range of museums and a burgeoning alternative arts scene. 2012 saw the launch of the city's first Fringe festival, as well as the smaller and quirkier On the Edge Arts Festival. You don't have to travel far from the centre of Leeds to enjoy the beautiful countryside. Kirkstall Abbey is a 10-minute bus ride from the city centre. The well-preserved ruins of the Cistercian monastery are 850 years old and provide a beautiful setting for a picnic. Leeds is best known for being Yorkshire's largest shopping city. From high-end to low-tech to vintage, you'll find just about anything in Leeds. The city also has an impressive indoor market, which is located on the corner of Kirkgate and Vicar Lane. Originally built in 1857, the market space is covered with wrought iron domes and balconies to watch the bustle of the scene below. The market stalls sell just about everything, and are the perfect place to pick up some economical snacks for a city centre picnic if the sun decides to be out, or to hide from the rain if you are not so lucky! If it's culture you're after, visit the Thakray Museum, which tells the story of medicine and even houses a Victorian operating theatre! If weird and wonderful medical instruments aren't your thing, the Royal Armouries can make for a great day out, especially on days when the museum has archery demonstrations. Just outside Leeds, and accessible by car or bus, visit Xscape - an artificial ski slope and activity centre, or Tropical World - a greenhouse with a waterfall, freshwater turtles and spiders beside Canal Gardens. Leeds has a huge nightlife scene which is mainly dominated by large traditional nightclubs. Alternatively, opt for a cocktail night with salsa music at the District Bar, a rising underground bar. The bar prepares good food and on some days even offers tapas at half price. The year-old Nation of Shopkeepers also has plenty of good live music, and is the destination of choice for trendy holidaymakers!
