Learn More about Göreme

Located in the historic Turkish region of Capadocce, discover Göreme
At an altitude of 1100m, the town is nestled in the heart of the region, which is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Thus, the city of Göreme, like the region in which it is located, has ancient origins, which also makes it special.

The first populations to have inhabited the city date back to the Hittite era, i.e. around 1800 and 1200 before J-C.

On your way to Göreme, you will have the opportunity to see all the wonderful landscapes and remains of the Capadocce region.

First of all, you can visit the open-air museum of Göreme where you can see splendid churches carved into rocky hills and coloured with colourful frescoes that will immerse you in Turkey's Byzantine past. Among these churches is Karanlik Kilise, also known as the "dark church", or the Tokali church.
There are also a number of picturesque caves.

Continue your journey to Love Valley, or presumably Baglidere Valley. The valley is often named after the original shapes of its rock formations. In this valley you can see picturesque fairy chimneys, which are huge natural columns of volcanic rock. There are also many cliffs and hills in the area.
You can hike into Love Valley on foot, but you can also take a hot air balloon ride for breathtaking views.

Not far from Göreme, in Nevsehir, you can discover the Uchisar Castle. Nestled atop small mountains, the castle is a rock formation that offers a panoramic view of the site.
A visit to this place requires a good resistance to physical effort because of the many steps and the climb to the castle.
From the castle you can see Byzantine tombs that have survived the wear and tear of time. You will be immersed in the Byzantine era and you will learn about the life of the people who lived there.

Still in Nevsehir, you will have the opportunity to continue your historical journey by visiting the underground city of Derinkuyu. At a depth of about 60m, the ancient city is said to have housed up to 20,000 people. The underground city is also said to have served as a refuge for Greek Christians when they were persecuted by the Roman Empire.

In Gorëme, you will have the opportunity to discover wonderful landscapes, especially thanks to the magical sunsets that can be seen from the town. You can also stroll around the town and stop at local restaurants to enjoy delicious specialities.

There are many other interesting sites to discover in the city, so if you are looking for knowledge and beautiful scenery, don't hesitate!
