Visit Zürich from the urban side: the old town

Zurich's old town, which is divided into two parts on either side of the river Limmat, is a real gem.
On the left bank, you should start by walking to the Lindenhof esplanade, a historic square planted with lime trees. From there you have a beautiful view of the Limmat and the other side of the city.

Below is one of the nicest districts of Zurich, the Schipfe, with small medieval alleys that go down to the river. Everywhere you can find restaurants with nice terraces to enjoy outside if the weather is a good and nice design and traditional stores to go window-shopping.

 For art lovers, you must visit the Fraumünster church, famous for its stained glass windows made by Marc Chagall and Augusto Giacometti (the cousin of the sculptor Alberto).

On the other side of the river is the emblematic Grossmünster Cathedral, with its two neo-Gothic towers.
 Inside, the stained glass windows of the choir are also signed by Augusto Giacometti. To enjoy a beautiful view of the whole city, you have to climb the 187 steps of the Charlemagne Tower to the viewing platform. 

The name of the district is Niederdorf. On the other side, you can see a lot of designer stores and beautiful old houses that testify to the richness of the old trade guilds.

Zürich West: the trendy city

Zurich West is the former industrial area of the city, which has now become a mecca for alternative culture, with disused buildings that have been renovated and taken over by trendy restaurants, art galleries, and original bars.

One of the symbols of the district is the Viadukt, along the Viaduktstrasse.
Today, above it is a pedestrian promenade, and below it, the arcades are occupied by trendy stores and a covered market with local producers selling local products.

A little further, at the foot of the Prime Tower, the 2nd highest tower in Switzerland (105m high), there is a very nice urban garden made of containers: the Frau Gerold's Garten. In the evening, it is a trendy bar.
