Visit the capital of Cantabria, Santander! Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, it does not attract many visitors, and yet it is full of gems. Its city center is surrounded by beautiful beaches, such as La Magdalena or El Sardinero. Discover this historical and natural heritage by walking along the pleasant maritime path. It is home to the Centro Botín, a cultural center with amazing architecture. Its exhibitions are always worth a visit. Also, don't miss the Archaeology Museum, where you can discover the origins of the Cantabrian culture.
Santillana is a small medieval town, particularly well-preserved, with an authentic atmosphere. While strolling in its pretty paved streets, you will cross many casonas. They are vast noble residences, whose facades are decorated with coats of arms and balconies with flowers. A real open-air museum. Only 1.2 miles (2 km) from Santillana is the Altamira cave, which hosts one of the most important pictorial sets of Prehistory! About 15,000 years ago, its galleries were covered with works of art by our ancestors. Cantabria is famous for its painted caves! If Altamira is the most famous, the El Monte Castillo caves are also worth a visit.
Go to the Peaks of Europe, which includes the highest peaks of the Cantabrian Mountain Range. Here you can enjoy great hiking. These wild lands covered with snow are also a cradle of Cantabrian mythology. They are home to sacred places, such as the Bermeja Tower or the Peña de Santa.
Cantabria has many towns that will arouse your interest such as the charming town of Comillas, Castro-Urdiales or San Vicente de la Barquera which are fishing villages with rich architecture where it is pleasant to spend time.
The region is very rich for its mountainous landscapes and its fine sandy beaches, but you will be impressed by the history that this region contains through its caves and its medieval villages.
Visitors may only camp in the Picos de Europa National Park's approved campsites and near the villages.
Outside these strict rules, a hiker may set up a tent only if, while crossing a mountain range, he or she is surprised by night at an altitude of more than 5250 feet (1,600 meters). In this exceptional case, the bivouac is authorized. Also, when all the places of a refuge are occupied, the installation of tents around the refuge is authorized, but apart from these exceptions, it is recommended to use the established camping sites.
