The island of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe looks like something out of a film set, so it's no surprise that it was chosen as the setting for the HBO series Game of Thrones. But whether you're a fan of the series or not, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe will enchant you with its stunning beauty. Located on the coast of Biscaia, 35km east of Bilbao, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is a must-see when in the Basque Country. Most people will recognise it as the Roca Dragon fortress from the seventh season of 'Game of Thrones'. However, its real name translates in Basque as "Castle of the Rocks" ("gaztelu" = castle + "aitz" = rock). The stairs to San Juan de Gastelgatxe The island is connected to the mainland by an artificial stone bridge. This bridge is a narrow path made up of 241 steps, which zigzag until they reach the top. This staircase has been recognised as one of the most spectacular in the world. The Hermitage of San Juan de Gastelgatzke When you arrive at the highest point of the island, you will see a hermitage with a bell on the front wall. Legend has it that if you ring this bell three times and make a wish, your wish will come true. The hermitage of San Juan de Gastelgatxe is dedicated to John the Baptist. Although it has never been proven, it is said that he set foot on this island. However, the building we see today is not the original one. Over the centuries there have been fires and battles, and the church has been rebuilt many times. The first hermitage is said to have been built in the 9th century, and in the 12th century it became a monastery. Two centuries later, however, the monks abandoned the site, taking all their valuables with them.
