The terrain is made up of red dunes with sparse vegetation cover. Linear dunes have formed under the influence of very strong winds, It is renowned for its birds of prey. Its emblem is the oryx gazelle, a species of bovid often considered to be an antelope.
The park contains more than 50 water points, all of which have an old-fashioned windmill to pump water. These wells were drilled in the 19th century for human use. Despite its sand dunes, it contains hundreds of species of plants of all kinds, including 64 species frequently found in the park, and each year new plants are discovered and even when it is very hot all these plants survive.
