Guarda is a city and a municipality in Guarda District, Beira Interior Norte sub-region in Centro Region in Portugal. The population in 2011 was 42,541, in an area of 712.10 km². The city of Guarda was founded by King Sancho I in 1199. The present mayor is Álvaro Amaro, who succeeded Joaquim Valente. The municipal holiday is November 27.

Built on the site of a former palace, the university is famous for its baroque library, the Biblioteca Joanina, and its 18th-century bell tower. In the old town is the 12th-century Romanesque cathedral, Sé Velha.
The city is still populated by large numbers of students from all over Portugal. They maintain student rituals and traditions. The traditional student costume is a black suit for boys, a black suit for girls, all with a black tie and cape.
The urban area of Coimbra has about 220,000 inhabitants, more than half the population of the district.
