Travel Tips for visiting Algarve

What to see in the Algarve region?

The Algarve is without a doubt the most famous, most photographed, and most touristic region of Portugal.

The Algarve is truly a region apart. The south of the country has all the ingredients for an unforgettable vacation by the sea.
Between beaches with crystal clear water set in cliffs, small fishing villages, and wild coasts beaten by the wind, we have a wide range of different landscapes around the ocean without having to travel many kilometers.
The coast between Faro and Cabo Sao Vicente has countless coves and beaches, each more beautiful than the next.

All of them are distinguished by rocky curiosities. Whether it is huge rocks rising from the water or cliffs falling into the ocean, it is the rocks that predominate and make all the charm of this region with a thousand facets.
But the west coast also abounds in equally beautiful landscapes. The beaches do not have these rocky characteristics in the west but they are wilder, less touristy.

IN THE SOUTH OF THE ALGARVE, DO NOT MISS :

  • Tavira:
Located at the foot of the river Rio Gilão, this former fishing port has managed to keep its cultural heritage intact and escape a bit from the mass tourism that hits the Algarve region. The city of 37 churches is located about 30 km east of Faro, which makes it one of the first destinations you will have the opportunity to visit if you land in Faro.

  • Praia da Falésia:
Between Faro and Portimao, this 8 km long beach is one of my favorite beaches in Portugal. These cliffs with ochre colors given directly on the beach are sublime. From the top of the cliffs, we just want to dive into the turquoise water that stretches before our eyes. A path allows you to go along the coast to see this superb beach from above. This is where the view is the most beautiful.

  • Ferragudo:
If there is one thing that characterizes the Algarve it is the small white villages that stand out from the landscape! Ferragudo is one of them. Its flowery and colored streets are peaceful and make it a place where it is a pleasure to walk!

  • The surroundings of Portimao :
If Portimao and Lagos are not, in my opinion, worth the detour and do not present any particular charm, their surrounding beaches are worth it! The Praia da Rocha, the Praia Dona Ana and especially Ponta da Piedade are sublime beaches. Their rocks and clear water make them exceptional beaches that you should not miss if you go to the Algarve. Drive along the coast and stop to see and swim on these beaches, you won't regret it!
