The city of Huaraz in Peru is not only the starting point to discover the Cordilleras of the region. It is also the center of a picturesque and peaceful region: considered as "the Chamonix of the Andes" by the locals, it allows discovering the archaeological heritage of the region and the Chavin culture, to know its authentic villages and its inhabitants, as well as the surrounding hot springs and spectacular lagoons surrounded by the Andes and its snowy peaks, the city enjoys a superb panorama.

Declared a World Heritage Site and a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, the Huascaran National Park Lagoon protects in its beautiful scenery wild species such as the condor, vicuña, deer, puma, Andean fox, and viscache chinchillas. You will be able to discover the splendid lagoons Llanganuco, Churup, Paron, Rajucolta, Auquiscocha! You will have the opportunity to see the glaciers of the Cordillera Blanca, among which the Huascarán, the highest peak in Peru.

The archaeological complex of Chavín de Huántar was built around 1200 B.C. and was declared a Cultural Patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO in 1985. It consists of temples, galleries, stone constructions, and squares. It was a significant religious ceremonial center of the Chavin culture. In one of its underground galleries is the Lanzon, a 14.8 feet high (4.53 m) monolith, which impresses with its fierce mythical image.

The Plaza de Armas: it is of course the central square of Huaraz, where we find the cathedral and the Sagrario San Sebastián. On the opposite side, you can find the tourist office and the archaeology museum. Santuario del Señor de la Soledad is a nice church located on the plaza de la Soledad to visit.

How to get to Huaraz from Lima ?

There are several options to go to Huaraz from Lima. Buses leave Lima every day (8 hours). Numerous companies offer the road, like Cruz del Sur, Movil Tours and Ormeño. To save time, you can take a night bus to Huaraz.

By plane: this is the fastest way to get to Huaraz and a flight from Lima to Huaraz takes only 1 hour. The Aeropuerto de Anta is 15 minutes from Huaraz by car. 

There are various possible routes from Lima to Huaraz, but we recommend the shortest one (248.5 miles/400 km in 6h-6h30) which is also the best known.
From Lima, take the Panamericana Norte (1N) to the bypass at Pativilca, then take east to Conococha (16) and finally the road (3N) to Huaraz.

The best time to visit Huaraz is from April to October because the rainy season extends from November to mid-April.
