🏖️ Beach 🏖️ Shore 🏖️ OceanHahei is a small village located in Mercury Bay on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand.
Hahei, located on the Coromandel, is a beautiful beach lined with pohutukawa trees and pink shellfish beds. The offshore islands form a sort of breakwater, making this sheltered beach ideal for swimming, boating, and fishing. The beaches of Hahei contribute to the beauty of the village, the fine sandy beaches are ideal for basking in the sun or doing a variety of water sports.
The coastline to the north and the offshore islands constitute the boundaries of a marine reserve, making it a popular destination for diving, snorkeling, and kayaking. The reefs, caves, arch, and soft sediments provide the ideal habitat for a variety of plants, fish, shellfish, and wildlife.
Hahei is a short drive from the beginning of the boardwalk that leads to the famous Cathedral Cove, where there is a beautiful limestone arch that separates two white-sand beaches. Cathedral Cove is considered one of New Zealand's must-do's. Easily accessible from Auckland, the discovery of the "most beautiful beach" of the country can be done in one day. You can also go to Hot Water Beach, located only a few miles away, to relax after your expedition to Cathedral Cove.
Don't hesitate to take a boat trip to discover the nearby islands and enjoy the beautiful view of Hahei and its coastline.
At the southern end of Hahei Beach, Te Pare Historical Reserve is the site of an ancient Maori fortified village. This historic area offers spectacular views of the coast and was once the site of two Maori Pa. A Maori Pa is a defensive settlement or fortified area where warriors could stand guard against enemy invaders. It is a place steeped in history that you must discover during your stay.
To get to Cathedral Cove by car, you have to head towards the town of Hahei to reach the parking lot located on Grange Road. The beach is accessible by foot, but also by kayak or boat. The parking lot is the starting point for the hike to Cathedral Cove, which can already be seen in the distance.
When you start The Cathedral Cove Walkway, there are several possible routes. You can go directly to Cathedral Cove by following a 1 mile (1.5 km) trail, which takes 45 minutes. However, it is also possible to follow other trails that take walkers to the coves of Mares Leg Cove, Stingray Bay or Gemstone Bay, famous for diving. If you choose to follow these, there is always the possibility of returning to the main trail to Cathedral Cove.
After three-quarters of an hour of walking, we reach a small wooden staircase that takes us to the beach of Cathedral Cove, where the famous limestone cliffs in the shape of an arch are standing. At low tide, it is easy to pass under the arch to reach the other bank.
