Contemplate the breathtaking treasures of this region on the water, in the air or by bike. Sculpted by glaciers more than 100,000 years ago, it's a place where waterfalls drop hundreds of meters into deep, black fjords, where pristine rainforest, untouched by man, clings to the mountainside, and where sparkling lakes and granite peaks look as they did a thousand years ago. Fiordland National Park includes the Sounds of Milford, Dusky and Doubtful. Fly over it on a sightseeing flight and you'll see why the park is a Wold Heritage Site. Some of the fjords can be kayaked, and if you want to see the less accessible ones, eco-tours can be organized. But above all, this is a great place for hiking. Fiordland National Park has three of New Zealand's greatest trails: Milford, Kepler and Routeburn. The Milford Track is probably the most famous hiking trail in New Zealand. Starting in Te Anau, it takes you 53 kilometers through breathtaking scenery, mountains, lakes and huge valleys to Sutherland Falls, New Zealand's highest waterfall. Accommodation ranges from the most basic backpacking tent to above average comfort.
