The Bay of Santa Cruz was the first name of this city, given by Hernán Cortés on 3 May 1535, although La Paz had a second inauguration in 1596, when the navigator Sebastián Vizcaíno gave it the name by which it is known today. An hour away from La Paz is Todos Santos, a spot that artists from all over the world have taken as a resting and inspiring place. It is also the site of the Hotel California, which is said to have inspired the song of the same name by the rock band Eagles.
