Learn More about Monterrey

One of Mexico's most industrialized cities - as well as its wealthiest and most westernized - Monterrey boasts one of the country's most attractive large cities. It lies in the Santa Catarina valley, dominated by the 1740 meter high Cerro de la Silla (Saddle Mountain) and highly regarded as the 2,380 meter high Cerro de la Mitra (Mitra Mountain) and the capital of the state of Nuevo Leon. Despite being an ultra-modern city, Monterrey has managed to retain some of its old-Spanish atmosphere in its narrow alleyways, flat roofs, and picturesque patios. First settled in the 16th century, its importance as a cultural center is evident in the many fine museums and galleries, along with the many public squares and parks used for organizes many events and festivals.

The fourth largest public square in the world, Monterrey's Macroplaza is a great place to start a tour of the city due to its proximity to many of the most important tourist attractions. Monterrey's most important catholic monastery, the Metropolitan Church of Our Lady of Monterrey (Metropolitana de Nuestra Señora de Monterrey) is well worth the inclusion of a walk downtown. One of the most pleasant walks in Monterrey is along the Santa Lucia waterfront boardwalk (Paseo Santa Lucía), a man-made river that stretches for nearly three kilometers across the city connecting Macroplaza with Fundidora Park. Along the way, you'll discover many interesting sculptures (including Inukshuk, a stone landmark or cairn), fountains, and other architectural highlights as the river meanders through the vertical park along the riverbank.

Just a short drive northeast of Monterrey is the small town of García, home to the Garcia Caves (Grutas de García), one of Mexico's largest cave systems. Two paths descend into the brightly lit caves, formed more than 50 million years ago, ensuring you'll get plenty of good photos of the amazing rock formations inside. A fun attraction suitable for all ages is the wonderful Alfa Planetarium (Planetario Alfa). Housed in a perfectly cylindrical building that seems to stretch out of the surrounding trees like a giant thimble, this ultra-modern attraction is as much a science hub as it is universe.
