Learn More about Melaka

Melaka, sometimes called Malacca, is a large Malaysian city located between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. But unlike its big sisters, no skyscrapers have sprung up here. Instead, there is a beautiful city centre that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Melaka was successively colonised by the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British Empire. These 3 countries have left traces of their colonization in Malacca. Add to that the Chinese, Indians, Muslims, Malays and you have quite a mix of cultures. Well, it is this mix of cultures that characterises Malacca. From one street to another, the scenery changes completely.

Start your stay by visiting Masjid Selat, the famous floating mosque. As the sun sets, the mosque lights up in green. A magnificent sight against the backdrop of the sea, the setting sun and the call to prayer.

Continue on to discover Melaka's Chinese quarter, Chinatown. A dozen or so streets make up this district, which is organised around Jonker Street (the main street of Malacca's Chinatown). Although the area is not entirely pedestrianised, it is quite pleasant to walk around. Some of the highlights of Malacca Chinatown are Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lok Street, 8 Heeren Street Heritage House and Cheng Hoon Teng Temple.
Jalan Tukang Besi Street is also not to be missed. It has the particularity of housing a Chinese temple, an Indian temple and a mosque in less than 200 metres. As in the rest of Melaka's historic centre, there are an impressive number of (paying) museums in Chinatown.

Also check out Dutch Square. Dutch Square is Melaka's postcard landscape. A small square with a fountain and red buildings (museums, church, clock tower).

Don't hesitate to visit the Saint Paul's church which dates back to 1521 and which has the particularity of not having a roof anymore. To get there, you have to climb a small hill. From the top of this hill, the view on Melaka is very beautiful. You can see the Menara Taming Sari panoramic tower, the ship of the maritime museum and the sea.

Don't pass through Melaka without stopping at the famous local Night Market where you can taste one of Melaka's culinary specialties: Gula Melaka.
