🌲 Forest 🏘️ Town 🌉 Bridge 🛣️ Road trip 🗼 Landmark 🐾 WildlifeKaunas is a lively and colourful cultural centre with some superb traditional Baltic ensembles. Kaunas, the country's second largest city (population approx. 360,000), lies at the confluence of the rivers Nemen and Neris. The city was founded in the 13th century and was the first walled city. From the 15th century onwards, Kaúnas became an important trading city with its river port. Between 1920 and 1940 Kaúnas was the temporary capital of Lithuania. Today it is a city that attracts visitors with its green, cobbled alleys lined with old houses. The old town of Kaúnas is attractive with its restored medieval towers and the baroque town hall, called the "White Swan". A few original and well-preserved buildings stand out in the old town: the Vytautas church, or the Perkunas house, a former merchant's house built at the end of the 15th century. The architectural ensemble of the Pazaislis Monastery, located outside Kaúnas in a perfect natural setting, is a must-see for visitors to the city. The monastery, with its harmonious architecture, is a pearl of the 17th century Lithuanian Baroque and one of the most valuable treasures of mature Baroque art in Northern Eastern Europe. The new town, built between 1871 and 1940, has a few points of interest. The main street, Laisves Av. and the Freedom Square are of particular interest. Not to be missed in the New Town, an unusual museum dedicated to Satan with a collection of 800 exceptional pieces. Kaunas is a cultural city with a very high student population. This is probably the reason why you will always find a warm welcome here.
