Built on a hillside in Higashiyama district, east of the city, this temple is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. The panorama embraces the city of Kyoto, magnified by the heights, as well as the abundant vegetation of the surroundings, of an increased beauty especially in spring during the blooming of the cherry trees or in autumn, during the glow of the maple leaves. The Otowa waterfall, at the bottom of the stilt terrace, can only be reached after a flight of stairs. It attracts a lot of tourists who come to visit the temple.
