The gross domestic product in Greater Hiroshima, Hiroshima Urban Employment Area, was US $61.3 billion as of 2010. Kazumi Matsui has been the city's mayor since April 2011. Hiroshima was founded in 1598 as a castle town on the Ōta River delta. Following the Meiji Restoration in 1868, Hiroshima rapidly transformed into a major urban center and industrial hub. In 1889, Hiroshima officially gained city status.

Hiroshima is a city in Japan located on the northern coast of the Seto Inland Sea on the largest Japanese island of Honshu. The city has been completely rebuilt following its destruction with atomic bombings that made it infamous. Hiroshima is famous for its gourmet food. The great specialty of the city is okonomiyaki, a speciality halfway between a filled omelette and a pancake, with noodles added to the classic recipe, it is a dish to try. Hiroshima is also the starting point for long excursions in the surrounding mountains.
