You will arrive in Capri by boat in the port of Marina Grande. When you approach and see for the first time the colorful houses overlooking the harbor full of small fishing boats and the mountain behind, you have a first clue of the beauty of Capri. To reach the main town of the island, you have two options: the funicular or a short but steep walk up the hill behind the port. But depending on the queue for the funicular, it will probably be quicker to walk, although it is much more pleasant on a hot sunny summer day. The city is very pleasant to explore with its quaint alleys and streets, small squares and wide selection of stores and restaurants. The main square is called the Piazzetta and offers great views and surprisingly expensive cafes. On the east side of Capri, you can visit two of the island's most important historical monuments: - Villa Jovis is a vast Roman villa that was at the heart of the Roman Empire during the time of Emperor Tiberius (42 BC - 37). -The Certosa di San Giacamo, dating from the fourteenth century, is a very large Certosa with a cloister that was built on part of one of the villas of Tiberius. To the west of the island, you will see a magnificent view, with a view through a large natural stone arch and up to the cliffs and the water beyond (the Arco Naturale) The other town on the island, Anacapri, is at a much higher altitude than Capri itself. The terrace of Monte Solara is the place to go for a magnificent overview of Capri's coastline and is accessible by the Anacapri chairlift (the $11.50 Seggiovia)
