Learn More about Trevi Fountain

The Trevi Fountain is one of the most beautiful and spectacular fountain in Rome. Millions of people discover it every year and throw coins at it, hoping that the myth will become reality.

The legend, which has become the custom in Rome, is based on the film "The Fountain of Love" (Three coins in the Fountain, 1954) and says the following:

If you throw one coin: you will return to Rome; if you throw in two coins: you will find love with a beautiful Italian; if you throw three coins: you will marry the person you knew.
For all this to work, it is said that it is better to throw the coin with your right hand, over your left shoulder.

With dimensions of 20 metres wide and 26 metres high, the Trevi Fountain is also the largest fountain in Rome.
The origins of the fountain date back to 19 BC, when the fountain was the end of the Aqua Virgo aqueduct.

The final appearance of the Trevi Fountain was acquired in 1762, started by the architect Niccolò Salvi and finally completed by Giuseppe Pannini.

For the record, the name Trevi derives from Tre Vie (three streets) because the fountain was once the meeting point of three streets.

Built at the request of Pope Clement XII, it was the work of Nicolas Salvi who completed it in 1762. The fountain replaced the mouth of the Roman aqueduct which always brings water from a spring, the Acqua Virgine. Legend has it that a young girl named Trevi revealed the location of the spring to Roman soldiers to save her virginity. You will find this story told on the right bas-relief of the fountain.

This monumental fountain, set against a palace, takes the form of a temple or a triumphal arch.

The fountain is an allegory of the Ocean with Neptune in the centre, standing on a shell-shaped chariot, drawn by two sea horses, representing violent water (left) and calm water (right). They are guided by two tritons.
