🗼 Landmark 🏘️ Town 🌉 BridgeTo visit Pisa is to visit one of the most important and famous places of the Renaissance. It is a city rich in art, history and culture, which gave birth to Galileo Galilei, Leonardo Fibonacci and Pisanello. Once a maritime nation on a par with Genoa and Venice, Pisa's fame stems from one architectural project that went horribly wrong. But the famous Leaning Tower is not the only asset of this fascinating city. Pisa is a student town, bustling day and night with locals rather than tourists. The city is a perfect blend of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance architecture and culture. Children and adults alike have heard of the 'Tower of Pisa'. The tower is probably the number one reason to visit Pisa and it is undoubtedly the most famous tower in the world. The Tower of Pisa is the bell tower of the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin of Pisa in Piazza dei Miracoli. It is said to lean at an angle of 3.59 degrees to the south; construction began in 1173 and took two centuries to complete; by the time the third floor was added in 1178, the tower had already begun to lean and work was suspended for 90 years. Until 1990, tourists had to climb 293 steps to reach the top of the tower. However, the angle of inclination had become dangerously high and it was calculated that the tower would collapse in 2000. So expensive works were carried out to prevent this, and the tower was reopened in 2001. And now, more than ten years after the completion of the consolidation work, the tower stands again without human intervention. Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin (Duomo) The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin, typical of the Pisan style, is a five-aisled Romanesque basilica in white marble, designed by the architect Busquets. It is the centre of a group of buildings on the UNESCO World Heritage List. At the entrance, don't miss the Porta di San Ranieri, a bronze door depicting the life of the Virgin and Christ. Inside, you can admire the pulpit by Giovanni Pisano.
