The northern boundary of the park is marked by the slopes facing theVal Pusteria. To the west, it is bounded by wooded slopes that descend to theVal Badia. To the south, the park extends to the provincial border, while the eastern border is marked by theVal di Landro. The sight of these peaks and steep walls gives the visitor the feeling of insurmountable and almost inaccessible mountains. In reality, this ring of peaks and walls encloses within it, almost as if to protect it, a territory of alpine pastures and plateaus that are very different from each other in terms of morphology and landscape. The alpine pastures of Fanes and Senes, as well as Pratopiazza, constitute the heart of this area. The natural park of Fanes-Senes-Braies presents a typical Dolomite landscape, and large areas of the park are of major scientific importance because of their complex geomorphology. The highlands of Fanes and Senes are characterized by karst phenomena in the most varied forms: karst fields, crevasses, wells, dolines and caves. The protected area also has several lakes, including Lake Braies, whose water is reflected in the massive rocky walls of the Croda del Beco, and Lake Dobbiaco, whose southern shore is characterized by wet meadows, an important habitat for many species of aquatic birds. Both lakes are among the best known natural reservoirs in South Tyrol.
