Learn More about Montescudaio

Montescudaio is located in the gentle hills of the Val di Cecina, about 50 km southeast of Livorno and 12 km from the coast. Like many villages in Italy, Montescudaio has had to struggle to keep its population growth stable. With 1,500 inhabitants in the 2000s, it was just reaching the size of the population it had in the mid-19th century. This town with its medieval character and quiet streets, which was originally a Benedictine monastery, can be a good stopover for a meal, or for discovering the booming wine of the Etruscan coast, on the road to Piombino.

Montescudaio has a fascinating history linked to its name. The name is derived from "mount shields", or "the squires", testifies to its strategic position and the castle of the Counts Gherardesca, who administered the territory for centuries.
It is easy to get lost in its narrow cobbled streets and the fragrant smells of craft shops. In a green area full of vineyards and olive trees, Montescudaio has some extremely valuable handicraft productions of food and drinks in the Val di Cecina.
Wine and oil are the best products that this place in the Tuscan countryside has always produced. Along the wooded paths outside the town you will find rest areas offering local specialities. Tuscany is a popular wine region and has a number of wineries that can be visited on guided tours.
In October, the country gathers in one of the most typical areas of Tuscany: Wine Festival

You can take the time to visit the vineyards, where wine is produced such as Le Colline di Sopra, Viaggio nel Gusto, Fontemorsi or Caiarossa. Or admire the beauty of churches with ancient architecture. Take about 2 days to taste the best wines and participate in their production, as well as learn the stories behind each drop of wine and you will not regret it.
