The alpine lake in the upper Val d'Ega (called Kälse in German) has long been a popular destination for tourists and photographers due to its picturesque reflection of the Latemar Mountains. Name|Lago di Carrezza (Italian),meaning "Lake of the Rainbow"). History|240 million years ago, this area was a sea. The myth of Lago di Carrezza Much of South Tyrol is rich in myths passed on from generation to generation and used to explain the formation of the striking mountains, lakes and green fields for which the region is famous. Lake Kaletsa, in particular, has brilliant iridescent waters, adorned with tales of beautiful water nymphs, magicians in love and unrequited love. The Ladin people and who have one of the oldest modern languages in the world!) According to the story, the story goes like this Long ago, on the shores of Lake Kaletsa, there lived a beautiful but very shy water nymph who used to sit on the shore, braid her hair and sing sweet songs. One day, the sorceress Masare, passing by the lake, was so taken by her singing and beauty that she fell deeply in love with her. But the shy nymph was not to be taken seriously and soon disappeared into the water, leaving Masare behind. The sorceress then consulted the local witch, Langwerda, and came up with a plan which, in retrospect, seems highly suspicious: to make a rainbow from the mountain of Latemar to the lake, disguise Masare as a jeweller and capture the nymph. However, the magician forgot his disguise and the nymph was immediately recognised, disappearing into the depths of the lake, never to be seen again. Masaré broke the rainbow into millions of pieces and threw them into the water of the lake. We don't agree with the use of fraud and witchcraft to catch women, but there is no doubt that the rainbow lives under the surface of this beautiful lake.
