The history of the island of Burano

The island of Burano was founded by merchants and fishermen from the Roman town of Altino who came here to take refuge from the barbarian invasions.
Its name comes from Boreano, one of the districts of Altino.
To recognize their house even in times of fog, the fishermen's wives painted the walls in bright colors.

Even today the inhabitants are obliged to repaint them every year, which makes photo lovers happy.
In the 16th century, needle lace appeared and brought prosperity to the island of Burano thanks to the craze of the European bourgeoisie.

The fishermen's wives used to mend the nets of their husbands developed a unique technique.

How to get to the island of Burano

The island of Burano is located 7 km north of Venice.

To get there by Vaporetto from Venice, it takes about 40 minutes by taking line 12 at the Fate Nove A stop which serves Murano, Mazzorbo, and Burano.
A tip is to stop one stop before Burano, on the island of Mazzorbo which is connected to Burano by a wooden bridge.
