Long considered the gateway to the land of Israel, it is the ancient part of the city and the oldest port in the world. A true city of artists, Jaffa is full of alleys housing galleries, jewelry shops and religious stores, in addition to several important monuments. Its history dates back to antiquity. Mentioned in the Old and New Testaments, it was used by King Solomon for the construction of the first Temple to import cedars from Tyre. In the Middle Ages, Jaffa was a prosperous port of the Ottoman Empire and one of the major stops on the road to the East. Its history is made up of conquests and reconquests. Finally, after the independence of Israel, Jaffa merged with Tel Aviv to form Tel Aviv-Yafo. Today, the port of Jaffa is a picturesque marina where the intense port activity of the past has given way to yachtsmen and small fishing boats. To get there, you can take the bus or simply walk along the "Tayelet" promenade that runs along the sea. Go to the port to watch the fishermen and enjoy the many shops and restaurants. At the northern entrance of the city, you can see one of the most important sites in Jaffa: the Clock Tower. It was built in 1906 by the Turkish Sultan Abed-el-Hamid and is one of a series of 7 towers. The others are located in the cities of Jerusalem, Acre, Nazareth, Haifa, Nablus and Safed. Not far from there you can stroll through the flea market "Shouk Hapishpeshim". Finally, continue your visit with the Catholic Church of St. Peter located on a small hill in front of the sea, whose original construction dates back to 1654.
