Travel Tips for visiting County Kerry

Is it the beauty of its coastline, its picturesque scenery or its rich heritage that makes Kerry so popular? With its rich history, delicious cuisine and unique wildlife, Kerry offers experiences for every traveler. Kerry faces the Atlantic Ocean and has many peninsulas and coves. On the Iveragh Peninsula, tourists and cyclists alike love to do the Ring of Kerry route. Pedestrians can also take the Kerry Way, which follows ancient paths that are generally higher than the one adopted by the Ring of Kerry. The Irish motto of County Kerry, "Comhar, Cabhair, Cairdeas", translates as "Cooperation, Help and Friendship". The County Kerry crest features blue and white mountains that symbolize the Kerry Mountains, the highest mountains in Ireland. The crown at the top is a representation of the Ciarraige, the pre-Gaelic people from whom the county takes its name. The crosses on either side are the monasteries of Ardfert and Aghadoe. The boat refers to Saint Brendan the Navigator, who is said to have discovered America long before Christopher Columbus. Kerry has two of the three highest mountains in Ireland, Carrauntoohil, which is part of the Macgillycuddy's Reeks range, and Mount Brandon, which is part of the Slieve Mish range. The Lakes of Killarney are famous in Kerry and have been renowned for their beauty for centuries: Lough Leane, Lake Muckross, also known as Middle Lake and Upper Lake, located near Killarney, County Kerry. The area surrounding the lakes is rich in natural and cultural history.
