Under religious tutelage since the 1979 Islamic Revolution that brought the mullahs' regime to power, Iran has long remained closed to visitors. The apparent relaxation of the regime since President Rohani came to power has led to a thaw in the country's relations with the West, as well as a slight recovery in tourism. The human rights situation, however, remains dramatic. The heritage, culture and architecture of Iran, a flagship country on the Silk Road, are the stuff of dreams.
