Nusa Penida, a charming island southeast of Bali, offers a unique blend of pristine beaches, stunning landscapes, and a rich cultural heritage. Traveling to this hidden gem is a must for anyone seeking a tranquil escape from the bustling tourist scene in Bali.
To get to Nusa Penida, you can take a speed boat from Sanur Beach, Bali. The boat ride takes around 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the weather conditions. There are several boat services to choose from, such as Maruti Express, Mola Mola Express, and Crown Fast Cruises, with multiple departures throughout the day.
It is recommended to book your boat tickets in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons. You can do this online or through your accommodation in Bali. Additionally, booking a snorkeling or diving tour ahead of time is a great idea, as Nusa Penida is famous for its vibrant marine life, including manta rays and the elusive Mola Mola fish.
The costs on Nusa Penida are relatively affordable. Boat tickets typically cost between $20-$30 USD one-way, while food, accommodations, and activities are generally less expensive than in Bali. Scooter rental is a popular way to explore the island and costs around $5-$7 per day.
Some of the best things to do on Nusa Penida include visiting the iconic Kelingking Beach viewpoint, taking a dip in the crystal-clear waters of Atuh Beach, and exploring the mysterious Broken Beach and Angel's Billabong. For adventure seekers, a hike to the top of Puncak Mundi, the island's highest peak, offers breathtaking panoramic views.
For a delicious meal, check out Penida Espresso, which offers a variety of Indonesian and Western dishes, as well as great coffee. Warung Pondok Madu is another excellent option, serving mouth-watering traditional Indonesian cuisine with a focus on seafood.
In terms of accommodation, La Roja Bungalows is a charming option with cozy bungalows, a swimming pool, and a restaurant on-site. For a more luxurious stay, consider Crystal Bay Bungalows & Restaurant, which features traditional Balinese-style bungalows nestled amidst lush gardens.
Off the beaten path:
For a truly unique experience, visit the thousand island viewpoint at the eastern end of Nusa Penida. This lesser-known spot offers a stunning view of the island's rugged coastline, with dramatic cliffs and turquoise waters creating a picturesque scene. To reach the viewpoint, follow a narrow path through local villages and lush vegetation. It's a perfect way to immerse yourself in the island's natural beauty while avoiding the crowds.
Another off-the-beaten-path experience is exploring the island's rich cultural heritage by visiting the traditional villages of Nusa Penida, such as Tanglad and Karang Dawa. Here, you can witness the weaving of traditional textiles, interact with friendly locals, and learn about the customs and beliefs that have been passed down through generations.

Nusa Penida is clearly for you.
Nusa Penida is an absolutely beautiful island, located only 30 minutes away south of Bali that we strongly recommend you to visit.
It is an incredible place with a postcard setting. here you will find a clear blue sea, white sandy beaches, super friendly locals.
On Penida Island, the most convenient way to get around is by scooter. Renting a scooter is very easy.
Located in the west of the island, discover an incredible place, namely Crystal Bay.
This very tourist place is known for its beautiful beach, its turquoise water and the many activities you can do there.
Among others :
This place is famous as it is a marvelous place for scuba diving where you will have the opportunity to see many different species of fish.
Having tested both, we can tell you that there is no comparison.
For snorkeling, you will surely go to Manta Point near Broken Beach.
To reach this place, you have to take a boat from the port of Toyapakeh or Crystal Bay.
The only drawback is that there are a lot of people in the water and few companies respect the manta rays.
If you are scuba diving, you can also start from Toyapakeh harbor and go to another point further away, also called Manta Point.
But this one is reserved for scuba divers. It can be crowded but much less than snorkeling.
It is at this point that you will have the honor to swim under and with the manta rays, those majestic creatures.
From Bali, there are many ferries available to take you to Penida Island.
