⛰️ Hill spotsMount Sumbing is an active volcano of Central Java that dominates the landscapes of the Yogyakarta region and the Dieng plateau. Close to Mount Sundoro and Merapi, it is part of the important volcanic complex of the Telomoyo region. Mount Sumbing offers travelers beautiful natural scenery and an incredible immersion in nature.
Rising to about 3,371 meters above sea level, Sumbing is the second highest peak in Central Java, just after Mount Slamet. Numerous summit craters have formed on its northwest-south flanks, some as large as 800 meters. The largest crater remains Kembang.
The landscape around the volcano is made up of tropical forests and rocky paths covered with sub-alpine vegetation, typical of an ecosystem made up of craters. The summit area of Mount Sumbing also has impressive volcanic phenomena such as sulfur fumes. There is also a large base of volcanic sand and a hot spring.
Like its twin, Mount Sundoro, Sumbing offers various interesting trekking trails to explore due to its altitude and geological activity.
The most interesting route is spread over several days and follows a fairly steep path. It starts in Yogyakarta, reaches Wonosobo, 3 hours from this city, follows the north to the base camp of Garun village which leads directly to the summit of Mount Sumbing. Given the length of the route, the participants can witness beautiful sunrises and sunsets, within a varied and beautiful landscape.
Located at the foot of the volcano, the Hindu-Javanese temple Selogryo is an important cultural point in the region. Built under the ancient kingdom of Mataram, it was rediscovered by the inhabitants around 1835. Those who love historical monuments will be delighted to explore the site in traditional Javanese architectural style. The sculptures are also a testimony to the ancient civilization that once inhabited the area around the volcano.
