Learn More about Kanyakumari

29,760 inhabitants. Formerly Cape Comorin, Kanyakumari is the southernmost point of the Indian peninsula, and the meeting point of three seas: the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. In addition to its importance as a Hindu pilgrimage center, one of the charms of the place is to contemplate the sunrise on the Bay of Bengal and the sunset on the Arabian Sea. Contrary to what the location of the city might suggest, few beaches are suitable for swimming and none are developed for tourists. Kanyakumari was once considered the Alexandria of the East. It was a great center of art, culture, civilization and pilgrimage for years. It was also a famous center for trade. During the first part of the 8th century AD, Islam penetrated the southern part of India by the sea route, following the traders and missionaries. With St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Christ, Christianity also arrived in 52 AD. Islam, Christianity and Jainism have contributed immensely to the city's rich architectural and literary heritage. Kanyakumari was also under the control of the Cholas, Cheras, Pandyas and Nayaks who were the successive rulers of South India. We owe them temples of great beauty. At the time of the British Empire, Kanyakumari was given the name of Cape Comorin, perhaps because of the inability of the British to pronounce the local names. A local legend says that Kanya Devi, an avatar of the goddess Parvati, was supposed to marry Lord Shiva, but he did not return in time and the wedding never took place. The rice and cereals planned for the occasion were never cooked. Even today, you can buy stones here that look exactly like rice and cereals: the locals believe that they are the remains of the legendary wedding that was not celebrated. As for Princess Kanya Devi, she has become a virgin goddess who protects pilgrims and tourists.
