🗼 Landmark 🤿 Underwater 🏘️ Town 🏰 Place of worshipA bustling city with an indomitable spirit, Amritsar has at its heart one of the most sacred Sikh values, the Golden Temple. Covered in 400kg of gold and surrounded by a serene sarovar (pond), one is immediately overwhelmed by the humility of this gleaming structure, which also houses one of the largest community kitchens (langar) in the country, serving some 20,000 people a day. Though visitors often head for the temple, the old-world charm of the city slowly creeps up on them, making them fall in love with a city that buzzes with bright, vibrant colours. No matter whether it is the riddled walls of Jallian Wala Bagh or the energetic scene of the Wagah border, one has to enter the city to feel the passion of thousands of people who have given their lives for the country. The many Indo-British style buildings that dot the cityscape are a testament to its rich history and important contribution to India's liberation movement. In addition, the city is known for its gastronomic pilgrimage through its frenetic and fantastic bazaars that entice you with their diversity and vibrancy. With a variety of dishes like butter-dipped paranthas, creamy lassi (yoghurt-based digestif), dahi-balla and aloo-tikki (seasoned chips), the food scene is full of flavours and aromas. However, what makes a trip to this city truly unforgettable is the warmth of its people. Amritsar takes a name from the sacred reservoir named Amrit Sarovar, which means pond of nectar, that surrounds the Golden Temple. According to tradition, the fourth Guru of the Sikh faith, Guru Ram Das, established the city in approximately 1574. It is said that Guru Amardas bought a piece of land, in the middle of dense forests, to build a reservoir. But he passed away before its construction could take place. Folklore has it that Guru Ram Das invited 52 traders from the surrounding area to settle down. They built 32 tents, which still exist in Amritsar, and are popularly known as Batisi Hatta. The building of Amrit Sarovar was accomplished by his later successor Guru Arjan Dev. It is interesting to note that Amritsar also gets a mention in the Hindu epic.
