⛰️ Mountain range 🐾 Wildlife ⛰️ HillHöfn is a harbour town of at least 1700 inhabitants, and is the administrative centre of the south-east of the island. Fishing is the main industry of the town, being a harbour town, which is literally called "port" in Icelandic: lobster is the local specialty of the town, as well as salted and dried fish.
Tourism is also developing, it must be said that with the numerous accommodations that the city offers (guesthouse, youth hostel...) to travellers in the middle of a vast and almost uninhabited area!
The city is located near the Vatnajökull National Park (to the southeast).
The area is protected and the natural environment is splendid, with very little human intervention. The area is protected and the natural environment is beautiful and untouched by man, with beautiful waterfalls, glaciers, mountains, lagoons and glacial lakes - an attraction that many travellers choose to visit in Iceland!
The location of this Icelandic town is key, as it is in a region with little activity and therefore attracts travellers who discover many beautiful walks.
Around Höfn, the Atlantic Ocean stretches in three different directions! Nearby are the small islands of Mikley, Krókalátur and Hellir, which are sparsely populated, but can be visited by boat in small groups, provided the sandbanks allow for safe mooring that day!
Höfn plays on its distinction of being one of the few harbours in the country, and while the town of Höfn itself may not always appeal to travellers because of its concrete appearance, there are several nice walks to do in the surrounding area.
Visit the seafarers' lodgings which are located not far from the big fishing boats, and discover the daily life of the fishermen.
We advise you to dine at the Pakkhus house, a former fisherman's dwelling transformed into a fine local restaurant!
You can also go to the tourist office, which is an interesting building to visit, restored in wood and built 150 years ago.
We recommend a visit to the tourist office to get some ideas for sightseeing, such as the glaciers of Vatnajökull. The blue ice caves can be visited from November to March.
In addition to visiting the caves, it is possible to take a snow scooter tour or admire the various iceberg lakes, the most famous of which is Jökulsárlón. A change of scenery and excitement are guaranteed!
You can also take a boat trip around Hornafjörður Fjord, which is separated by the ocean from the sandbanks
After all this sightseeing, you can relax in one of Höfn's outdoor swimming pools for a quiet afternoon! Also ideal for children and the family.
