Thórsmörk also named the "Thor's Forest" (one of the most powerful gods of the Germanic world) is a glacial valley in a small mountain range in southern Iceland located north of Eyjafjallajökull, northwest of Mýrdalsjökull and south of Tindfjallajökull.
Embedded in the middle of three glacier volcanoes which are huge natural barriers,the valleys is renowned for its amazing range of colours and protected by the mountains, mosses, ferns and birch trees grow. The local climate is very mild with more sunshine than the rest of South Iceland.
Like all of Iceland's inland regions, which are set back from the coastal plains, the Þórsmörk valley is one of the most interesting places for hikers, with a multitude of trails including the Laugavegur trail (which leads to Landmannalaugar), or a short walk through the Stakkoltsgjá gorge with its waterfall. From the Langidalur hut, you can climb to the top of Valahnukur for a magnificent view of the surrounding glaciers or walk to the huge black sandy beach of Skógar.
