Small town in baroque style, north-east of Budapest, discover Eger, in Hungary!
Its castle, its thermal baths, its small streets, its basilica, its minaret... a whole which makes a few days stay very pleasant.

Eger is located near Budapest, in the north-east of Hungary.

One of the must-sees in Eger is its castle, or at least its remains. It dominates the city and you can see it just by looking up.

Dating from 1241, it has survived the centuries and has many stories to tell.
The castle became famous thanks to the resistance put up in 1552 by Captain Dobó István against the truks.

The ruins of the Gothic St. John's Cathedral are located inside the castle, and there is a possibility to visit the underground passages and dungeons of the castle.
There are areas dedicated to exhibitions on weapons, the history of Eger, etc.

Don't forget to visit the Dobó István square, which is the main square of Eger. It is a lively square (by city standards) and is lined with small bars and restaurants.
In the square you will also find a statue of the famous city defender Dobó István and the Church of the Friars Minor.

On the way to Eger, a visit to the thermal baths is a must. Indoor or outdoor, the water is always very good and the relaxation is there.
The temperature of the pools varies from 30°C to 38°C, so you're bound to find a water that suits you!

The Basilica of Eger is also worth seeing. It is very imposing as it is one of the 3 largest in Hungary. It is also called the Church/Cathedral of St. Michael and St. John and was built between 1831 and 1837 by József Hild.
The Basilica is in a classical style and has various paintings and sculptures.
However, it hides its game well. Underneath it is a network of cellars. This one being so important that this place is described as "the city under the city".

Finally, the minaret is one of the largest in Hungary with its 42 m. It is also one of the last 3 Ottoman minarets in Hungary.
It can be visited only in April and November.
