Learn More about Tegucigalpa

Tegucigalpa, the forgotten capital of Honduras, has many colonial buildings in the Baroque style. Located in the heart of a fertile valley, and hemmed in by several mountain ranges, the city of Tegucigalpa is the capital of Honduras, and the main point of entry to the country. Crossed from north to south by the immense Choluteca River, Tegucigalpa is one of the "forgotten capitals" of Central America, but well worth a visit. The city was officially established by the Spanish conquistadors in 1578, attracted by the numerous gold mines from Cerro El Picacho, a 1327-metre high mountain north of the city. Tegucigalpa has an interesting colonial heritage, mainly concentrated around the city centre. The cathedral of San Miguel Arcangel and the churches of Los Dolores, San Francisco and La Merced, all in baroque style, are the most important monuments. A little further on, the sublime Manuel Bonilla National Theatre, the former Presidential Residence and the Jose Cecilio del Valle Palace, all dating from the beginning of the 20th century, stand out. To the east of the city is the Basilica of Suyapa, one of the most impressive buildings in the capital, with its immense towers and its 46-metre high dome. Finally, twenty kilometres from the city, you should not miss the superb La Tigra National Park, which is mainly made up of cloud forest and is home to toucans, hummingbirds, white-tailed deer, jaguarondis and tiger cats.
