Tikal National Park is one of the few World Heritage properties inscribed on both natural and cultural criteria, both for its extraordinary biodiversity and for its archaeological importance.

Tikal is one of the major sites of the Mayan civilization which was inhabited from the VIth century BC to the Xth century of the Christian era. 
Its ceremonial center includes superb temples and palaces and public places to which one reaches by ramps. 

Remains of dwellings are scattered in the surrounding countryside.

Tikal National Park is located in the Petén province of northern Guatemala,
In a vast forested area often referred to as the Mayan Forest,which extends into neighboring Mexico and Belize.

The different ecosystems and habitats are home to a wide range of neo-tropical flora and fauna. 
Five felines, including the jaguar and puma, several species of monkeys and anteaters, and more than 300 species of birds are part of its remarkable wildlife.  

The forests are home to more than 200 species of trees and more than 2,000 higher plants have been recorded in the various habitats.
